Stable Isotope Variation in Pathological Bone
نویسندگان
چکیده
Bone samples taken at autopsy from seven individuals from western Canada are studied histologically and the bone protein is analysed for stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. The objective of the study is to determine if pathological conditions result in variations in bone protein stable isotope ratios. Of the seven individuals sampled, three are normal and four are pathological. The latter include post-paralytic atrophy, healing fracture, active periostitis and healing osteomyelitis. The normal samples are included in order to determine how much variation to expect in different segments of a bone. In the three samples analysed, the variation is 90.3 for dC and 90.2 for dN. Three of the four pathological specimens exceed normal variation. The greatest variation occurs in the bone with osteomyelitis from an individual who had AIDS (the diseased segment was approximately 2‰ greater for dN than the two normal segments from the same individual). The higher nitrogen isotope ratio in the bone segment with osteomyelitis is most likely a result of the fact that the collagen was formed from the catabolism of existing proteins in the body. This finding has implications for the interpretation of nitrogen isotope ratios in individuals who may have died from wasting diseases. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Spatial variation in dC and dN of liver, muscle and bone in a rocky reef planktivorous fish: the relative contribution of sewage
Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios in the liver, muscle and bone of a rocky reef planktivorous fish (Atypichthys strigatus) were compared amongst sewage impacted and nonimpacted regions off eastern Australia. Fish were sampled in summer and autumn over 2 years from replicate sites across the three regions. Liver and muscle N ratios, representing short(weekly) and long-term (yearly) nutri...

The application of stable isotope analysis (SIA) has become a standard scientific approach in Agricultural and Ecological researches and, more in general, in several disciplines such as biology, botany, zoology, organic chemistry, climatology, and nutrition. The main objectives of this paper are (1) to provide a simple definition of stable isotopes and (2) to illustrate analytical measurement m...
متن کاملAssessing Raman Spectroscopy as a Prescreening Tool for the Selection of Archaeological Bone for Stable Isotopic Analysis
Stable isotope analyses for paleodiet investigations require good preservation of bone protein, the collagen, to obtain reliable stable isotope values. Burial environments cause diagenetic alterations to collagen, especially in the leaching of the organic bone content. The survival of bone protein may be assessed by the weight % collagen, % carbon and % nitrogen yields, but these values are ach...
متن کاملStable isotope signatures of large herbivore foraging habitats across Europe
We investigated how do environmental and climatic factors, but also management, affect the carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope composition in bone collagen of the two largest contemporary herbivores: European bison (Bison bonasus) and moose (Alces alces) across Europe. We also analysed how different scenarios of population recovery- reintroduction in bison and natural recovery in m...
متن کاملBioarchaeological Analysis of Isolated Crania from the Elizabeth Site in the Lower Illinois River Valley
This thesis explores the life history of six isolated skulls interred in Mound 3 of the Elizabeth site, a Middle Woodland site in the lower Illinois valley. This study employs analyses of osteological features, stable and radiogenic isotopes, and biodistance for a cross-section of the Mound 3 population (n=15), including the isolated crania. Isotopic results reveal significant variation in lead...
